The Robert Koch Institute is one of the central institutions for health protection in Germany. It serves the Federal Ministry of Health as a central scientific institution in the field of biomedicine. The Institute combines basic research with risk assessment and with political advice. Its most important tasks include protection against infectious diseases and the analysis of the health situation in Germany. The Robert Koch Institute is located in Berlin (www.rki.de).

For the specific research group Bioinformatics (NG 4), we have an opening for a three-year contract for a

Postdoctoral Researcher
(Up to salary scale 14 TVöD 100%, depending on qualification and experience. The TVöD is the collective salary system for the public service in Germany.)

Duties and responsibilities:
• Development of algorithms and software tools for pathogenicity prediction in the field of synthetic biology
• Development of procedures for similarity analysis and detection in high-dimensional genomics and proteomics data sets
• Close cooperation with experimental groups in the Centre for Biological Security with regard to the verification and interpretation of results
• Publication and presentation of research results

Required Qualifications:
• PhD and Master’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g. statistics, bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, physics or quantitative biology)
• Experience in algorithm development
• Experience in the application and development of statistical methods or machine learning algorithms
• Good computer programming skills and familiarity with software engineering methods
• Knowledge of molecular biology (genomics/proteomics) and experience in the collaboration with experimental groups
• Preferred qualifications include practical experience or in depth skills in at least one of the following fields
o Analysis of high dimensional datasets
o Methods for the analysis of next generation sequencing data
o Structure biology and structure prediction for proteins
• Excellent command of English (written and spoken); knowledge of German is a plus
