‘Physiological costs of acidification with salinity change to marine Crustacea’
Applications are invited for the post of postdoctoral researcher in Ocean and Earth Science (University of Southampton – National Oceanography Centre, Southampton). This post, initially for two years but with the expectation of a one-year extension, is associated with a NERC-funded project to investigate climate change and the costs of survival in two species of marine crabs with contrasting abilities to compensate for environmental change.
The project is based on the recent realisation that taxa and species normally expected to be more tolerant of the changes in ocean pH, salinity and temperature predicted by 2100 may actually be under threat, as the physiological changes caused by environmental disruption could be energetically expensive. The project will establish links between compensatory capacities, energy use and performance in two species of brachyuran crabs with differing homeostatic abilities.
The postdoctoral researcher will be based in Southampton and will have practical experience of standard molecular techniques to determine change in transcriptional activity and, ideally, in quantitative PCR techniques. Using these skills the researcher will, in collaboration with project partners at the University of Bangor, explore the mechanistic basis of adaptation to concurrent changes in pCO2and salinity and identify transcriptional costs to the maintenance of immune function, as an exemplar of maintenance metabolism.
The project will involve work away from Southampton at the University of Bangor so you will need to be able to travel as required. The successful candidate will also need to be well organised, highly motivated, innovative and adaptable and have the ability to work as part of a team, as well as collaborate across multiple disciplines.
For informal discussions regarding this position please contact Dr C. Hauton on (+44) 0 2380 595784 or email ch10@noc.soton.ac.uk
The post is available from 1st October 2012 for two years initially.
The closing date for applications is 8 September 2012. Please apply online via http://www.jobs.soton.ac.uk or telephone 023 8059 2750 for an application form. Please quote reference 146712HN in all correspondence.
