Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Researcher position within the Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials (NFB) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This is a collaborative project with a multinational medical device company.

Organisation: The Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials (NFB) led by Prof. Abhay Pandit is a partnership of scientists, engineers and clinicians, who all share a common vision of developing the next generation of functionalised biomaterials as innovative and successful therapies that provide solutions for current clinical needs. The outputs of the Network are innovative biomaterials based therapeutic strategies for application to a wide variety of human diseases. The University provides a research-friendly social and cultural environment. Galway is also one of the key cities in Europe with a significant presence of the medical device industry sector.

Job Description: A postdoctoral researcher position for one year, which may be extended, subject to review, will be available starting in September 2012.  The successful applicant will develop a wide range of in vitro assays to evaluate the biodegradation of biological devices. The successful applicant will:

  • Carry out and assess the in vivo degradation of various biological devices;
  • Develop, execute and optimise various in vitro degradation assays;
  • Co-ordinate and manage the project in an independent manner.

Applicant's Specifications: Suitable candidates should have a track record in a research and development environment. Candidates must be highly motivated and passionate about developing new concepts and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills. A postgraduate degree in a biomedical field with proven expertise in extracellular matrix based biomaterials is necessary. Previous experience in the development of in vitro and in vivo assays is also essential.

Start date: September 2012

Salary: €38,826 (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)
