General Summary
This position serves as a research trainee for the purpose of enhancing and developing research competencies. In this appointment, the postdoctoral researcher will participate in planning, designing and conducting highly technical and complex research projects under the supervision of a Principal Investigator to include analyzing research data, providing interpretations, contributing to the development of research documentation for publications and/or providing technical reports, papers and/or records.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serves as a research trainee for the purpose of enhancing and developing research competencies
- Participates in planning, designing and conducting highly technical and complex research projects under the direction of a supervisor. May or may not work independently.

Position Specific:
- Understand the biology and pathogenesis of emerging and biodefense-related RNA viruses
- Identifies, researches, compiles and evaluates data sources, background information and/or technology related to the area of specialization
- Develop cell-based high throughput plat form to identify cellular factors/signaling pathways involved in entry of emerging and biodefense-related viruses.
- Use various molecular biology and cll biology approaches to elucidate virus entry and trafficking mechanisms.
- Utilize the high-throughput screening platform to identify broad-spectrum small molecule antiviral compounds against various emerging and biodefense-related viruses.
- Utilize approporiate animal models for in vivo testing of the lead antiviral compound(s).
- Contribute to grant application & publications derived from project data.
- Operates and maintains scientific equipment
- Maintains external awareness of scientific discipline through familiarity with current scientific literature
- Observes appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements and study protocols.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Immunology or a related discipline with emphasis/experience in emerging/biodefense-related viruses. PhD candidates obtaining their diploma in 2012 may be considered. The PhD must be awarded before employment can commence.
- Experience in biosafety level-3 work environment preferred.
- Required government clearance to work with select agents.
- Keen interest in understanding the pathogenesis of emerging and biodefense-related RNA viruses.
- Strong molecular biology and cell biology background.
- Experience in techniques such as RT-PCR, Real-Time qPCR, cDNA cloning, Gel electrophoresis (DNA and Protein), Western blotting, ELISA, Immunostaining, Flow cytometry, Fluorescence and confocal microscopy, Mammalian cell transfection etc.
- Experience in the development of reverse genetics system for RNA viruses is highly desirable.
- Experience with the development of biochemical and/or cell-based assays suitable for high-throughput screening and/or high-content imaging is desirable.
