In particular this project will focus on the role bacteria and archaea play in ammonia oxidation in coastal sediments. A combination of fieldwork, isotope-pairing techniques and molecular analysis of ammonia oxidisers diversity, abundance and functioning in situ and in SIP microcosms will be employed. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Molecular Microbial Ecology, Biogeochemical Cycling or similar; experience in experimental design and associated data analysis; strong writing skills as demonstrated by publication of peer-reviewed scientific papers; and a proven ability to work independently. Field sampling and presentation of results at scientific meetings is required. Experience with isotope-paring techniques and/or SIP would be an advantage.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Molecular Microbial Ecology, Biogeochemical Cycling or similar sciences. The ideal candidate would have experience in molecular microbial ecology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, high throughput sequencing, (RT)-Q-PCR, SIP, FISH and/or isotope paring techniques as evidenced by publication record. Candidates should have excellent communication and organisational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new research; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
