Research Fellow

Machine Learning for Adaptive Multimodal Interaction

Heriot-Watt University - School of Mathematical & Computer Sciences

Grade 7 or 8 £29,249 - £35,938 or £37,012 - £44,166

Applications are sought for a Research Fellow post in the Interaction Lab in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The Research Fellow will work on the EC FP7 Projects SPACEBOOK, Help4Mood, and JAMES to investigate, develop, and evaluate data-driven Machine Learning approaches to Adaptive Multimodal Interaction.

The post will be located in the Interaction Lab at Heriot Watt University's School of Mathematics and Computer Science (MACS), see www.macs.hw.ac.uk/InteractionLab. The successful candidate will join a group of 10 postdoctoral researchers. The projects involve collaborations between Heriot-Watt University and the Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Umea, Bielefeld, Valencia, Catalonia, FORTH (Greece), KTH (Sweden) and companies in Barcelona, Italy, Germany, and Sweden.

The post is available immediately, until February 2014 in the first instance, with opportunities for extension.

Principal Duties: Detailed research duties are to implement and evaluate machine learning approaches to dialogue management, Human-Robot Interaction, and Natural Language Processing, to implement and evaluate user simulations from dialogue data, and to collect and analyse multimodal HCI data. The successful applicant will also present the research outputs at project meetings and international conferences.

The main duties of the post are to perform collaborative research on the above-named EC FP7 projects, to contribute to EC deliverables, to write and submit research articles, to participate in EC project research meetings and international conferences, and to contribute to the development of new project proposals.

Key Objectives:

  • To implement and evaluate machine learning approaches to Natural Language Processing, dialogue management, Human-Robot Interaction, and multimodal generation.

  • To implement and evaluate user simulations from multimodal dialogue data.

  • To collect and analyse multimodal interaction data.

  • To complete EC project deliverables as specified in the project Technical Annexes.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience (at PhD level or equivalent) with machine learning approaches to adaptive interaction management for Dialogue Systems, and/or AI planning, and/or Human-Robot Interaction

  • Programming in Java and/or C++ and/or Python

  • Experience with collection and analysis of HCI data.

  • Experience of evaluation methodologies in HCI.

  • Experience in statistical modelling and analysis.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Background in affective/social computing, mobile computing, and/or health informatics.

  • Collaborative research experience.

  • Publications and existing international research profile in the field of dialogue management and/or Human-Robot Interaction, and/or Natural Language Processing.

  • Experience in development of research grant proposals.
