A postdoctoral research position is available within a group studying how neuronal activity contributes to maturation of cortical circuits, and ultimately, how deficits in these processes lead to disrupted brain function in neurodevelopmental disorders. Current projects encompass assessment of the functional impact of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) splice variants on synaptic plasticity, circuit development, network activity and behavior.

The candidate should be highly self-motivated, with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related field and have a genuine interest in the biological bases of behavior and mental illness. The applicant should have experience with either 1) neuroscience applications of cell culture, microscopy and standard molecular and cellular biology techniques or 2) experience with mouse genetics coupled to in vivo rodent manipulations, animal behavior or neurophysiology.

The Lieber Institute for Brain Development is a state of the art research facility located at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. The focus of the Institute is to uncover the neurodevelopmental origins of schizophrenia and related neuropsychiatric disorders and translate this understanding into improved treatments. The candidate would be joining a group of highly interdisciplinary teams that collaboratively utilize approaches in the basic sciences through human genetics to translate discoveries into novel therapeutics.
