The Conn Center actively seeks a post-doctoral researcher for the Solar Manufacturing R&D group. This two-year position is immediately available for post-doctoral researchers interested in gaining experience for careers in industry or academia.

Specifically, the Fellow will: a) synthesize and optimize photovoltaic (PV) nanomaterials for low-cost solar cells; and b) develop roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing technologies for large-scale deployment.

Candidate will synthesize and characterize various nanomaterials and flexible transparent conducting electrodes for PV applications; will use solar cell characterization techniques including I-V and efficiency measurements and utilize inkjet printing, nanoimprinting, and plasma cleaning methods for R2R technology development. Duties include operation of novel material synthesis process equipment for experiments as well as high-level data analysis and statistical assessments, report and grant/manuscript writing, and oral presentations on a regular basis.

Must hold Ph.D. in electrochemistry, materials science, physics, chemical engineering, and/or related fields with a strong background in R2R R&D. Hands-on experience with nanomaterials synthesis and polymer fabrication, characterization, and testing are preferred. Ability to formulate, plan, and conduct research with defined objectives and outcomes within budget and time constraints, work independently and cooperatively in a creative lab environment, exercise high-level scientific judgment and initiative, and deliver exceptional oral and written communications are required.

About Conn Center Solar Manufacturing R&D. The Conn Center recently installed a R2R manufacturing line to research and develop the next generation of materials and processes to increase the affordability and applicability of PVs. This unique facility is capable of exploring new materials and processes for PVs via scalable platform using traditional printing technologies processed in near atmospheric conditions. Current projects include low temperature deposition and processing of semiconducting films, formulation and deposition of transparent conductive films, and formulation and deposition of thin film nanocomposites. The Conn Center is a 10,000 sq ft facility with laboratories dedicated to renewable energy research in materials synthesis, materials characterization, device fabrication, and device characterization. About PI. Thad Druffel, PhD, PE, leads the Solar Manufacturing R&D group. Dr. Druffel spent the last 20 years in industry and has been involved in installation of solar and water projects worldwide as well as cutting edge corporate and federally funded research and development. His work in nanocomposites resulted in several publications and a commercialized product. He has most recently designed and developed the Solar Manufacturing R&D facility at the Conn Center.
