Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Centre for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics at the William Harvey Research Institute to work on a Medical Research Council-funded project studying the cell fate decision of embryonic cardiac progenitor cells. The research will be based primarily at our Charterhouse Square Campus, London.

Efficient method to generate cardiomyocytes in vitro benefits us on human health. This must be useful for drug test as well as for the treatment of heart failure. However, 100% purity is still impossible even from ES cells or iPS cells, and obtained cardiomyocytes are immature which may cause tumour if transplanted. Thus better understanding of the molecular mechanism of cardiac progenitor cells differentiation is critical. We have been studying the cardiac progenitor cells with the single cell level resolution, and have found a unique trait of Tbx5-expressing cardiac progenitor cells in the early mouse embryos.We are looking for a candidate with expertise in developmental biology. Essential requirements for this post include a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject and/or equivalent previous professional experience in molecular biology, cell biology and developmental biology. A demonstrated ability to communicate well, work within a team, good publication record, and maintain good laboratory records are also essential.The post is full time and fixed term for 30 months. It is funded by a grant from Medical Research Council and is available immediately. The starting salary will be in the range £30,500 – £32,173 per annum inclusive of London Allowance, depending on experience. The benefits package for this post includes 30 days leave, flexible working hours, childcare vouchers scheme, defined benefit pension scheme and an interest free season ticket loan.Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.
