Karolinska Institutet
invites applications for a
Postdoc position in Breast Cancer Cell Biology
Department of Biosciences and Nutrition
Area of responsibilities/description of the work
Description of the research project/area of research
Breast cancer displays a marked histological and functional heterogeneity. In vitro studies suggest that this may be explained by stochastic state transitions causing plasticity among cultured breast cancer cells. However, it is unclear how plasticity may occur or be regulated in vivo. To address this issue, an established in vivo transplantation model of breast cancer where primary breast tumors are directly propagated in vivo will be used. The project aim is to establish xenograft models of different morphological breast cancer subtypes and to investigate their plasticity and response to various treatments. Methods to be used also include FACS-sorting, cell culture in vitro, gene expression profiling, bioinformatics, standard molecular cell biology techniques, and statistical modeling in collaboration with biostatisticians.
The project will be performed as a collaboration between professors Rune Toftgård and Staffan Strömblad, Center for Biosciences, Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, KI, and is financed by and integrated with the Karolinska Institutet Breast Cancer Theme Center (BRECT), where leading basic, translational and clinical breast cancer researchers collaborate closely together.
Start date: as soon as possible.
Qualifications
We are searching for a strongly dedicated candidate with an excellent track record in cancer biology, cell and molecular biology, experimental pathology, or similar fields. Experience with mouse models, histopathology, FACS-sorting, expression profiling, and statistical modeling will be an advantage. Excellent communication skills in English are required.
Special weight will be put on academic skills and demonstrated excellence in research.
Duration: 2 years with a possibility for extension.
Dependent on the background of the successful applicant, the succesful candidate will be supported either by a scholarship or an employment.
A person is eligible for a postdoc position if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than five years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
