Job Description

We are recruiting a post-doctoral fellow with experience in immunology and/or hematology to study mechanisms of tolerance induction after in utero hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (IUHSCTx). This is a potentially useful strategy to treat congenital stem cell disorders such as sickle cell disease, thalassemias, etc. In our lab, we use a mouse model of IUHSCTx in which we transplant hematopoietic cells into mid-gestation mouse fetuses to understand how the fetal environment can be used to induce tolerance to allogeneic cells. We have found that the fetal environment is conducive to accepting allogeneic cells without any conditioning, but that the maternal immune system limits engraftment. We are now studying factors in the fetal environment that lead to successful engraftment and tolerance.
