Associate Scientist – Clinton, IL – 2894

Role Purpose:
The purpose of the Associate Scientist is to assist the trialing organization in their roles to create superior products and help support targeted goals for precision, accuracy and efficiency.

Accountabilities: May plan and design experiments, develop data summaries, interpret results, and make appropriate conclusions and recommendations.
May prepare technical reports or data summaries. May communicate reports via oral presentations to peers.
Functions as a member of a project/product team.
Reads and understands scientific literature, participates in meetings and shares relevant information with others.
Provide day-to-day guidance to Research Assistants, Field Technicians and seasonal staff.
May manage off-station testing including locating and contracting yield trial sites.
May manage off-season nurseries or other field testing.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Critical knowledge:
BS degree required, MS preferred, in a scientific discipline, typically plant breeding or equivalent.
Needs to demonstrate knowledge of breeding principles.

Critical Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years experience in a leadership level field trailing role.

Critical Success Factors & Key Challenges:
Meeting targeted CV values at yield testing locations set forth by the trialing manager.
Meeting targeted production of nursery trials.
Meeting targeted HSE goals.
Working within a set budget.

Critical technical, professional & personal capabilities:
Understanding of genetic backgrounds and how it relates to the development of superior products.
Understanding of the use of genetic markers and their application to a breeding program.
Ability to supervise and work with Research Associates, Field Technicians and other seasonal staff (may vary by location or specific job).
Ability to work with other staff members in a team environment.
Needs excellent organizations skills.
Ability to use MS Office, especially Word and Excel, and other standard software.
Ability to use and support the SPIRIT system.
Ability and motivation to learn new technologies.
Ability to obtain a CDL (Commercial Drivers License).
Ability to obtain a Passport for international travel.

Travel Requirements and other information:
A minimum of two years in current position is required (requirement for internal applicants only).
All applicants must be eligible to work in the US.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in field or greenhouse.
Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
Capable of working long hours during time-critical periods of the growing season.

WORKING CONDITIONS WHILE PERFORMING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Field, greenhouse, laboratory, office.
Domestic travel required with occasional overnight stays.
Travel outside continental U.S. may be required. Stays at off-season nursery locations may extend to 2-3 weeks.
Work may be performed under environmental conditions of extreme high or low temperatures and moisture. Potential allergens¾pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in the field or greenhouse.
