英国桑格研究院基因组研究博士后
job description
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
The Parasite Genomics group uses large-scale sequencing approaches to study parasites associated with diseases of global importance to humans and animals, with a particular emphasis on diseases of developing countries.
Within parasite genomics, a major program focuses on using genomic data to understand the biology of parasitic helminths responsible for neglected tropical disease. Existing projects build on genome sequence data to address scientific questions from population genomics through to functional genomics and immunology, and include working on a range of nematodes, flukes and tapeworms in collaboration with external experts in particular systems. Specific examples include in-depth comparative genomics of schistosome species, transcriptomic analysis using RNA-seq of the life cycle of a number of nematode parasites as well as a number of de novo genome sequencing projects.
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and ambitious postdoctoral fellow to contribute to projects involving the application of high-throughput sequencing technologies to understand the biology of helminths. Key aspects of this role will include the analysis of ‘next generation sequencing’ data, genome assembly and comparison, phylogenetics, population genetics, and analyzing transcriptome data, with the exact mix of approaches depending on the interests and expertise of the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be encouraged to both get involved in existing projects and develop their own interests in related areas, taking advantage of the unparalleled resources and expertise available within the Institute.
Key responsibilities:
• Analysis of high-throughput sequencing datasets
• Basic statistical analyses
• Interpretation of results in their biological context and preparation of manuscripts for publication
• Development and validation of novel analytical methods where required effective communication and cooperation with collaborators and colleagues design of spin-off research projects and follow-up studies
• Presentations at International Meetings
Essential Skills
We are looking for candidates with a strong track record of academic achievement including a relevant degree. Good computational skills and an at least basic working knowledge of statistical analysis are essential. In particular:
• a PhD in a relevant biological subject area
• good scripting/programming skills (e.g. Perl and R)
• experience of bioinformatic analysis of sequence data
• demonstrable experience in one of the following: comparative genomics, population genetics or functional genomics; or in-depth experience of nematode or platyhelminth biology with significant exposure to genomic data and methods
• good working knowledge of statistical methods
• demonstrable experience and initiative in developing and leading projects
• strong written and verbal communication skills
Ideal Skills
• a solid foundation in molecular biology
• demonstrable experience in combining computational and laboratory work
• strong track record in publishing scientific work in international peer-reviewed journals
• experience of working with next-generation sequencing data
• experience of working in a Unix environment
• experience of working with helminths
• demonstrable good project management and organizational skills
Other information
The Parasite Genomics group is interested in establishing and interrogating the genomes of various unicellular and other parasites to further our understanding of how these organisms live and grow, and in particular of how they affect and interact with their human or animal hosts. In doing so, our ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of new and effective medicines and/or vaccines that eliminate the parasites and cure the diseases they cause.
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training.
Successful applicant(s) who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £26364pa. On confirmation applicants will be moved on to the pay scale above
The Wellcome Trust funded position is offered on a 3-year contract.
Benefits
The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge.
