job description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Bergen, Department of Biomedicine. The post is temporary, for a period of three years, financed by the Norwegian Research Council. The project title is ”Functional role of tumor-associated glial cells (TAGs) in brain cancer progression”. The postdoctoral fellow will join the Oncomatrix Research Lab, and work under supervision of associate professor Per Øyvind Enger.

The lab focuses on tumor-host interactions and has established models to separate and investigate the stromal and malignant cell compartments in experimental tumours. We aim to extensively characterise how cancer-associated fibroblasts and glial cells evolve during tumour growth and to identify heterotypic signalling circuitries by which these cell types modulate tumour growth. Our research group has close interactions with clinicians and our lab is physically connected to the Haukeland University Hospital through a skybridge. We access a biobank with brain tumour biopsies through collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery. Infrastructures include an animal facility with operation theatres and a dedicated small animal MRI scanner, a proteomic core facility, and an imaging platform for electron, multi-photon, confocal and fluorescent microscopy as well as equipment for laser micro-dissection and flow-cytometry/fluorescence activated cell sorting. Our lab has equipment for and uses a wide spectrum of standard techniques, including cell culture with hypoxia chambers and ECIS monitoring, rt-qPCR, immunostaining, western blots etc. We are funded by the Norwegian Research Council, the Norwegian Cancer Society and Helse Vest. The lab members represent different cultural backgrounds and we collaborate both on an international and a national level. The successful applicant will take a primary role in the laboratory experiments, preparing research results for publication, presentation at meetings, and assisting the PI in the writing of grant proposals. Qualifications and qualities
- We are seeking a self-driven highly motivated and talented individual with the capacity to approach complex and ill-structured problems relating to how the microenvironment participates in tumour growth. He/she will have excellent work ethics and abilities for critical and creative thinking, combined with equally strong skills to work systematically and to collaborate.

- Previous experience and publications in some the following areas will be an advantage: DNA methylation profiling, SNP genotyping, next-gen sequencing, bioinformatics or biostatistics, molecular cloning, gene silencing, site-directed mutagenesis, protein biochemistry, proteomics and advanced multi-colour flow cytometry/cell-sorting. Research experience from biomarker discovery and candidate gene characterization using lab or computation-based approaches will be considered an advantage.

- The candidate should be proficient in spoken and written English, as the working language will be English.

- The successful applicant must hold a Ph.D. or have submitted her/his thesis by the application deadline, preferably in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry or other cancer related fields. It is required, in order for an appointment to find place that the thesis is approved.

For further information about the position, please contact Associate Professor Per Øyvind Enger, Ph. +47 55 58 63 47, e-mail per.enger@biomed.uib.no

We can offer

- A good and challenging work environment within the field of cancer research

- Salary level 57 (code 1352) on the government salary scale (NOK 456 100 per year, before tax)

- A good pension scheme in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
