The Labex RESSOURCES21 proposes an integrated scientific and educational approach to the understanding, exploitation and environmental management of strategic metal resources for the 21th century. It is supported by the laboratories of OSU-OTELO. 6 priority research actions. of two broad types : i) The 3 scientific goals at the heart of the subject: Strategic metals, Analytical frontiers, Develop new ecologically efficient processes, ii)3 actions to fill current needs and to facilitate achievement of the scientific goals : Modeling ore body geometry, ecologic impact, biogeochemical environmental sensors. The goal of RESSOURCES21 is to reinforce research and education through the recruitment of 5 or 6 high level chairs, 35 additional doctoral students over 10 years.

Aims : strategic metal concentrations from ore genesis to ore beneficiation and environmental impacts The LABEX « Resources for the 21th Century » is offering Post-doctoral positions starting in 2012 for one year (renewable eventually). The candidates will be integrated into a joint project between several laboratories of the University of Nancy (France) involved in the LABEX. RESSOURCES21 addresses several of the important challenges related to the problem of assuring an adequate supply of critical and rare metals for the coming century (reports SNRI 2009 and CE2010). In order to meet this goal, the laboratories of RESSOURCES21 will develop new approaches that combine their competences and knowledge : • ore genesis and metal cycle in the lithosphere : in situ multi-element analysis of metals present at low concentrations in minerals and fluids, stable and radiogenic isotopic features of metal rich phases or related gangue minerals, in order to trace the processes that occur in the lithosphere. This will permit us to fingerprint sources of elements and fluids using a multi-tracer approach, to precisely date the various stages of the concentration process, to identify organo-metallic associations and understand the associated biogeochemical cycles. • modeling of ore processes : mass, heat and fluid transfer (2/3D), ore deposition, with the goal of integrating coupled physical processes in time varying geomodels at multiple scales. • search for new processes in ore beneficiation : to permit exploitation of minerals with low metal concentrations, to allow more efficient use of valuable by-products, and to take into account the complete cycle of each metal, integrating the constraints of sustainable development and particularly of recycling. • estimation of the environmental impacts of the new types of metal exploitation so as to assure environmental preservation (ecotoxicity, management of ecosystems and territories, land use and rehabilitation, observation and monitoring). The preliminary selection of candidates will be made after examination of the CV and provided documents : - list of publications, - experience in field, analytical, experimental or modeling approaches - project in two-three pages summarizing the main trends in research that the candidate would like to develop.
