job description
Bioinformatics and Systems Biology of Vaccines
Research Scientists, Analysts, Post Doctoral Fellows
Positions in bioinformatics/systems biology with a focus on Microarray Analysis are available in the Innate Immunity program headed by Dr. Bali Pulendran, at the Emory Vaccine Center, in Atlanta, USA. The successful applicants will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary group of researchers including immunologists, vaccinologists, clinicians, and bioinformaticians. Our research strives to move the frontier of systems biology for immunology and vaccinology. The successful applicant will work in a multi-disciplinary team to use microarray and systems biology approaches to explore the induction and regulation of immune responses in humans to vaccines. The primary goals of this effort are to: (i) identify key, early correlates of vaccination or ‘signatures’ that defines the initial parameters for later development of protective immune responses, using several vaccines (e.g. Nature Immunology vol 10, 1, p116-125, 2009; Immunity vol 33, p 516-29; Nat Immunology. vol 10, 12, p786-95, 2011); (ii) identify early
signatures of disease progression in infectious diseases.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidates will play a leading role in data analysis, which includes integrating heterogeneous data and developing predictive models and testable hypotheses. He/she will be a team leader, and confident in collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to manage a bioinformatics research group.
The specific responsibilities of this position include:
Development of analysis protocols for in-house, and public gene-expression datasets
Development or adaptation of software tools and scripts to meet project needs
Lead efforts in data management. Our repository currently contains greater than 1000 inhouse
microarray files, and data from miRNA profiling, Luminex, flow cytometry,
metabolomics, etc. The candidates will lead database maintenance
REQUIREMENTS:
The qualified applicants will have a Masters Degree or a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, or in a relevant biological discipline or in computer science, plus demonstrated experience in bioinformatics research. Previous demonstrated experience in microarray analysis is required. Familiarity with working in a Linux/Unix environment, plus experience with relational databases and fluency in at least one programming language (R, Python, Perl or Java) are required.
Excellent attention to details and organizational skills. Applicant must have the ability to work in a fast moving interdisciplinary team environment, as well as the ability to discuss issues and provide solutions to scientists with different backgrounds. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
PREFERENCES
Research novelty, leadership in project management and experience in wet lab molecular biology are highly desirable. Strong quantitative or statistical background, experience in machine learning and predictive modeling will be a plus.
