job description
Postdoctoral and Ph.D. student positions are available at the Max Planck Institute for Medical
Research, Heidelberg, Germany in the groups of Anton Meinhart and Ilme Schlichting.
The Meinhart group studies RNA processing machines involved in maturation of RNA 3’-ends (Nat
Struct Mol Biol 15: 795, NAR 39: 337) and macromolecular complexes that lead to programmed
cell death and virulence in pathogenic bacteria by poisoning bacterial cell wall synthesis (PLoS Biol
9: e1001033).
The Schlichting group studies photoreceptor proteins to understand how absorption of a photon
results in a specific structural change of the protein that triggers a secondary signal resulting in a
biological event (Nature 459: 1015). We aim to exploit this knowledge to design new
photoreceptors for applications (Nature 461:104).
Both groups are members of the Department of Biomolecular Mechanisms which offers a
stimulating, multi-disciplinary international research environment, state of the art equipment and
regular access to synchrotron beamtime, providing an ideal starting-point for a successful scientific
career. Heidelberg is one of the top centers for biomedical research in Germany, and graduate
students will have access to several different Ph.D. programs. For more information on the
department and groups, please check the departmental website (http://www.mpimf-heidelberg.mpg.de/departments/biomolecular_mechanisms). Depending on previous experience
and scientific interest, successful candidates will contribute to the analysis of one of these projects
using structural, biophysical, and biochemical methods, spectroscopic assays, and molecular
biology for functional analysis by in vivo validation of structure-based functional hypotheses. The
positions provide the opportunity for broad training in protein expression, crystallization using highthroughput
pipelines, X-ray crystallography, SAXS/WAXS, kinetics, spectroscopy, genetics, and
molecular biology.
Applicants should have experience in aspects of a structural biology pipeline, for example protein
production and purification, X-ray crystallography and / or SAXS/WAXS. Past experience with
complementary biophysical techniques (ITC, AUC, CD etc.) and molecular biology is desirable.
Please send CV, a brief summary of research experience and interest, and contact address of two
(PhD application) / three (Postdoc application) referees to BMM.Recruitment@mpimfheidelberg.
