job description

Salary range £28280 to £34778 dependent on experience. Closing Date: 14th August 2011

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is an international leader in cancer research. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in the newly formed Haematological Cancer Genetics team led by Dr George Vassiliou. The team studies the pathogenesis of haematological malignancies using both mouse models and human cells/samples.

The successful applicant will work closely with Dr George Vassiliou to study how mutations identified by whole genome sequencing of human acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) collaborate to cause this disease. In practice, this will involve the systematic analysis of the effects of the studied mutations alone and in combination, focusing on their effects on haemopoiesis and the collaborative mechanisms through which they activate leukaemogenesis. The expertise and unique biological resources developed in the laboratory put the team in a strong position to lead in this field.

Essential Skills
Candidates must have a PhD in a related field, such as molecular, cancer or developmental biology and a strong publication record. The ability to work in a team and have good organisation skills and a strong academic track record (as demonstrated through prizes, awards or a good first degree) are essential, as is expertise in molecular biology.

Ideal Skills
Experience with mouse models of haematological diseases / leukaemia would be an advantage. Also practical knowledge of cell culture/transfection, flow cytometry, gene expression and methylation studies would be important strengths.

Other information
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. Successful applicant(s) who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £26,103. On confirmation applicants will be moved on to the pay scale above. This is a 3 year fixed-term contract.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr George Vassiliou (gsv20@sanger.ac.uk).

Benefits
The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk,
