job description
TWO POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW POSITIONS AVAILABLE ON AUGUST 1st, to join a group whose research interest is focused on “ UNDERSTANDING THE MOLECULAR and CELLULAR BASIS OF HOST-PATHOGEN INTERACTION”. NIH-funded projects include: 1. Molecular and cellular mechanism(s) of T cell, natural killer (NK) and natural killer T cells (NKT) cell functions in regulating immune responses to human pathogenic bacteria, mainly intracellular bacteria using mouse and human models. 2. Cellular and Molecular mechanism(s) underlying T cells, NK and NKT activation; effector differentiation.
These projects utilize cellular and molecular approaches: a) pathogen-reactive T cell frequency and effector function using tetramer technology, ELISPOT, ELISA, and multiplex flow cytometry of effector molecules; b) isolation of dendritic cells and macrophages and in vitro co-culture with purified T and NK cells to determine their antigen presentation functions; c) identification of bacterial ligands that are recognized by Toll-like receptors and stimulate NK and T cells using proteomics techniques; d) Gene-deficient mice and adoptive transfer techniques are used to delineate mechanisms of T cells, NK and NKT cells mediated pathology and/or protection during infection.
A doctoral degree (PhD) in immunology, cell biology, or molecular biology is required with experience in techniques such as ELISA, ELISPOT, flow cytometry, protein purification, western blotting, immunocytochemistry, real time PCR, RNA and DNA isolation, in situ hybridization, cell culture, animal work (transgenic and knock-out mice) as well as other immunological and molecular biology assays. The position also includes some managing day to day operation of the lab.
Strong basic mathematical skills are a must (ratio, dilutions, etc.) and computer skills for data entry and data analysis as well as organizational skills.
The fellow (s) will directly report to Dr. Nahed Ismail, and is expected to interact with other investigators in the Department of Pathology as well as in other departments such as Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology at U. of Pittsburgh
To apply, send a recent Curriculum Vitae along with a statement of Research Interests as well as name and telephone number (and/or email address) of three references from whom letters of recommendation can be sought, to: Nahed Ismail, Ph.D., Department of Pathology, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA Telephone: 615-327-6364; Electronic: nismail@mmc.edu
