job description

We currently have an opening in the group of Prof. Janet Thornton for a postdoctoral researcher to work on a project funded by the Wellcome Trust in collaboration with experimental groups at the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh. The Thornton Group is part of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The project aims to address the question ‘what is an antigen?’ It will involve the analysis of existing protein structures and predicted structures (generated from searching sequence resources) for molecular surface features, which could be potential antigens. This will require the development of tools and methods for identifying, comparing and ranking the potential antigens. In addition, the post holder will be required to develop a web front end to display data and analysis from the project. The results of the analysis will be used in further practical experiments as well as providing a publicly available resource.

Interviews are expected to be held on the 8th August 2011.

The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community.

For further information please contact http://www.ebi.ac.uk

The successful candidate willhold a PhD in either bioinformatics/computational biology or molecular biology with some experience of computational work. (S)he must have experience of working with protein structural data and preferably have some knowledge of immunology or parasitology, though this is not essential.

The project will require the post holder to be able to design and develop computational tools in their preferred computing language (preferably Python, Java or Perl) as well as to develop a MySQL database for housing results.

As this is a collaborative project the successful candidate will be required to have good communication skills to transmit the results to partner groups. In addition, they must be able to work as part of a team and be able to interact with scientists from different disciplines.

Excellent English, written and oral, is essential as is excellent interpersonal skills.
