Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
Job Description
A Ph.D. level research position is available in molecular genetics and bioinformatics utilizing the Xiphophorus fish model system (http://www.xiphophorus.txstate.edu/) to explore gene interaction and regulation events within interspecies hybrids. Desirable candidates will have experience in performing independent research investigations and effective personal skills needed to perform comparative genomic studies using novel data stemming from current Xiphophorus transcriptome and genome projects. Expertise in genetics, bioinformatic data mining and previous research experience is required. Prior experience in setting up and maintaining large databases (i.e., microarray, next generation sequence data) and knowledge of current assembly programs is desired.
Preference will be given to candidates having experience in genome biology, computer science, or bioinformatics. Ideally candidates will be familiar with management and analysis of large-scale genomics datasets, in particular sequencing data. Basic skills in command line operation, UNIX/Linux operating systems and a strong background in at least one scripting or programming language (e.g. Perl, Python) will be considered an advantage. This post will provide excellent experience and access to novel data in this rapidly developing field for individuals looking to advance towards an independent research career.
Salaries are competitive and this position will be provided both technical support and travel support for training workshops and visitations at collaborating laboratories. Length of appointment is anticipated to be 2 years, dependent on progress.
