Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs experiments in the area of protein expression and purification, enzyme kinetics, RNA transcription.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience and Training
Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry or related fields preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability
• Knowledge of the principles of genetics.
• Knowledge of protein biosynthesis machinery.
• Skills in the safe and accurate use of biological and chemical reagents including radioactive isotopes.
• Ability to communicate (oral and written).
• Ability to work in a group as part of team.
• Proficiency in the use of computers including spreadsheet and curve-fitting programs.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in experimental systems using the above knowledge and skills.
• Isolation of RNA and protein.
• Kinetic analysis of enzyme variants.

Physical Requirements
Moderate work. Standing, fingering, talking, hearing, repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Subject to inside environmental conditions, hazards (low levels of radioactive substances and toxic chemicals), and atmospheric conditions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Performs and designs research experiments
• Maintains accurate and complete records of research
• Prepares reagents for research
• Publishes papers
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Provides training and assists in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory.

AUTHORITY/ACCOUNTABILITY:
Once trained, will usually work under indirect supervision.

PROBLEM SOLVING:
Must be able to solve problems in the performance or results of experiment
Numerical calculations of reagent concentrations are expected.
