Job Description
A full-time Research Scholar (postdoctoral position) is available at NCIRE, located at the San Francisco VA Medical Center in an academic cell and molecular biology laboratory focusing on basic mechanisms of signal transduction in cancer stem cells and solid tumor progression. The position is responsible for executing scientific experiments under minimal supervision of the principal investigator as well as providing general administrative and scientific support for the laboratory.


Essential Functions:
• Conduct research experiments using both human and animal tissues
• Perform histology techniques including tissue processing (fixing tissue, embedding, sectioning, staining, etc.); immunohisochemistry and in situ hybridization
• Perform molecular biology techniques including plasmid preparation, DNA sub cloning, bacterial transformation, gel electrophoresis, and colony screening
• Prepare cell cultures, including preparation and maintenance of cell lines, freezing and thawing of cell suspensions, and media preparation
• Prepare radioisotope-labeled RNA probes
• Prepare compounds, reagents, and/or buffers for experiment use
• Document digital images and create composites
• Develop and introduce new methodologies related to signal transduction investigation
• Assist in maintaining and caring for small animals including husbandry, genotyping, pre- & post-operative care, tumor and bone marrow extractions
• Assist with training laboratory staff in research techniques and equipment use as needed
• Sterilize and replenish laboratory supplies as needed
• Perform supply ordering/maintenance and equipment maintenance; perform additional general laboratory management duties as assigned
• Assist with development and submission of research proposal related to angiogenesis
• Perform other related duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will have:
• MD and/or PhD in biology, biochemistry, or a related field and 2 years of molecular biology experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Intermediate-level working knowledge of procedures used in molecular biology/immunohistochemistry
• Demonstrated knowledge of cell culture techniques and in situ hybridization procedures
• Knowledge and 2 years of animal care and maintenance including animal husbandry and tumor xenograph experience
• Knowledge and skill in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to issues or studies concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of program operations
• Skill in conducting detailed analyses of complex biological problems and experiments
• Computer literacy with emphasis on MS Windows operating systems and software applications; working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Axiovision (Digital Imaging software)
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and oral/written communication skills
• Strong accuracy and attention to detail
• Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals
• Ability to work under minimal supervision
