job description

Title: Postdoc, Department of Proteomics

Tenure: Two years, with a potential extension of additional one year

Employment conditions:
The Department of Proteomics at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research is offering a post doctoral position in the Proteomics and Cell Signaling Group. Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The position will be at the level of postdoctoral fellow and the salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and AC, around 31.000-33.000 DKK/month (approximately 5.900-6.300 USD/month). To the basic salary, a monthly contribution to a pension fund is added (17.1% of the salary), and a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experiences and qualifications. In all cases, the ability to perform the job will be the primary consideration, and thus we encourage all – regardless of their personal background and status – to apply. The tentative start date is 1 September 2011, or soon thereafter, and the duration of the position is 2 years.

Background:
The research at the Department of Proteomics is headed by Prof. Dr. Matthias Mann and consists of three independent groups (group leaders: Dr. Chunaram Choudhary, Dr. Michael L. Nielsen and Prof. Jesper V. Olsen). You will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of international researchers from EU, Asia and USA. We use cutting-edge MS technologies for unbiased identification and quantification of posttranslational modifications as well as for global proteome quantitation (Choudhary and Mann, Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol. 2010 Jun;11(6):427-39.; Choudhary et al., Mol Cell. 2009 Oct 23;36(2):326-39.; Choudhary et al., Science. 2009 Aug 14;325(5942):834-40.). The department aims at continuously improving and applying the proteomics technology to investigate diverse biological processes. Using these approaches we will study cellular outcomes at ‘systems-level’ in response to different perturbations (such as growth factor stimulation, gene knockdown etc.). Furthermore, we use protein and peptide pull-down approaches to identify specific interaction partners. In addition to the state-of-the-art mass spectrometry infrastructure, the department is well equipped for performing follow-up studies using molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry techniques.

Job description:
The candidate should be able to conduct independent and creative research, demonstrate scientific productivity, and show good inter-personal and communication skills.
Recently, we have improved mass spectrometry-based proteomics methods for unbiased analysis of in vivo acetylation sites (Choudhary et al., Science Aug 14;325(5942):834-40.). The applicant will use this cutting-edge technology to analyse protein lysine acetylation on a global level, and to identify regulatory acetylation sites under different chemical or genetic perturbations. In addition, our group is interested in investigating cross-talk between regulatory PTMs such as phosphorylation, acetylation and ubiquitylation. The candidate is expected to perform biological follow-up experiments on novel and interesting findings derived from these proteome-wide PTM screens.
The postdoctoral fellow will work in the Department of Proteomics together with Group Leader, Dr. Chunaram Choudhary.

Qualifications:
• The candidate is required to have Ph.D. or equivalent degree in natural or medical science.
• Excellent scientific track record, including at least one publication as first author in a high quality, peer reviewed international journal.
• Knowledge in bioinformatics or skills in statistical computational environment such as “R” will be considered a distinct advantage.
• Prior experience in biochemistry, immunofluorescence microscopy, cell culturetechniques is desirable.
• Knowledge in one or more of the following area(s) would be considered an advantage: genetics and biology, cell signaling, high-throughput protein-protein interactions, or chromatin biology.
• Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential.
• Good communication skills, both oral and written.
• An analytical aptitude for devising innovative scientific or technical solutions.
• Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence.

For further information, please contact Group Leader Dr. Chunaram Choudhary (chuna.choudhary@cpr.ku.dk).
Your application marked “211-0087/11-3850” including a CV, a publication list and contact details of 3 referees must be at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research before 15 July 2011. Your application should be sent by e-mail to jobs@cpr.ku.dk
