job description
Research on platform development for real-time data in an urban context
Future Urban Mobility Interdisciplinary Research Group

Over the past several years, the SENSEable City Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has carried out extensive research into the use of real-time data generated by urban networks and systems. The digital revolution has layered a vast system of cameras, communication devices, microcontrollers and sensors over our environment, enabling entirely new ways to imagine, monitor, and understand our cities. These systems have a value that goes beyond their original purpose: the digital exhaust of cellular networks reveals social and economic patterns, tracking systems highlight global material flows, and digitally managed transportation fleets address a city’s mobility. Now that digital devices are embedded in our cities and communicate data, we seek to design the urban operating system to facilitate the transaction of such data. In the research initiative carried out in Singapore, the SENSEable City Laboratory has access to real-world data for this experimentation.

We are seeking exceptional candidates to fill one postdoctoral position involving research on platforms for the collection, processing, integration and re-distribution of real-time data in the urban context. The research specifically involves the development of software platform architectures for the management of urban real-time data in the context of the LIVE Singapore! project. The position will be based at the Lab’s base in Singapore at the Singapore-MIT Alliance of Research and Technology (SMART).

Additional information about the SENSEable City Laboratory and its projects is available at http://senseable.mit.edu and specifically at http://senseable.mit.edu/livesingapore.

Requirements:

A Ph.D. in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering or equivalent. Candidates should be independent and self-motivated, yet able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. Technical knowledge should include distributed systems and data management, e.g. database and geographic information systems. The position requires sound experience in the design and development of software architectures, data processing, data mining and statistical analysis. Experiences with network theory and complex visualizations are a plus and so is experience in developing software in an industrial context.

We ask applicants to send their application letter and CV together with two or three reference letters and, if possible, links to open-source projects or information on projects the candidate has worked on intensively to senseable-applicants@mit.edu.
